The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, has been sponsoring the observance of Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day on the 20th of August each year. The State level function this year will be held at Hyderabad organized by the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP).

Among the activities to be held in connection with the Renewable Energy Day are A.P. State Level Paper presentation and Debate competitions on Renewable Energy among engineering college students in A.P.

University College of Engineering, Osmania University, has been requested by NREDCAP to organize the above competitions. The following guidelines and instructions are to be observed by all participants of the events.

Topics: Economically viable Renewable energy Technologies for India.

Soft Copies of Full length papers in MS Word Format of maximum 6 Pages (A4 Size) to be submitted through email. AfterReview of Papers, Selected teams for participating in the event will be displayed on website on August 15th 2011.

NOTE:Official Nominations of all events, on College Principal letter head should be produced while attending the event on 16th August, 2011 Otherwise, registrations will not be considered. Two Hard copies of Papers need to be submitted on the event day.

College Principals are advised to conduct College level competitions for selecting the best teams for above events

Prizes for each category: 1st Prize – Rs.5000/-, 2nd Prize – Rs. 3000/-, 3rd Prize – Rs. 2000/-.
The Winners will be awarded cash prizes and certificates in the State level function scheduled on 20th August 2011 at Ravindra Bharathi, Hyderabad.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR DEBATE

A team for competition is to consist of (exactly) two students from same college.
Only one team should participate from a college with an authorization letter from college principal without which the
 
team will not be allowed to participate in the competition. Participants should also produce their college identity cards on demand.
All teams must register for the competition by sending an email to energy.ouce@gmail.com as explained under
 
REGISTRATION title below.
The Coordinator will make NO effort to assist interested students who are unpaired in finding a partner or to recruit
 
such a partner.
If the numbers of teams registering are more than expected then the screening (elimination round) would be done
 
through a written exam or debate.
The number of rounds for the competition will be announced on the day of debate.
Personal remarks of any sort are to be avoided during debate.
Stay on the topic of discussion. If a topic brings up another issue, start another thread.
Rounds will be adjudicated by Faculty of the University and / or special guests invited by the Coordinator.
Within each round judges will assign a winner of the debate to one side only.
The final competition will be held on a single day (16th August 2011) from 9.00 A.M. to about 5.00 P.M. at the
 
University College of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Topics for Debate:

Theme: Impact of Renewable energy in India
                             
Topics for debate can be on any of the renewable energies such as Wind energy, Bio-energy, solar energy (solar thermal and solar photo voltaic etc.), Geo-thermal energy, Ocean thermal and tidal energy, Hydrogen and fuel cells etc.

Judging Criteria:

The judges will consider the following points in determining the performance of a team.
1
Content and quality of the supporting evidence.
2
Soundness of the arguments used in defending your stand.
3
The use of examples, anecdotes and precedences.
4
Clarity of thought in the presentation and speaker's ability to present   his\her case eloquently and persuasively
5
Judges will also assign each competitor a rank and a score reflective of their speaking. These points will be used to determine ties in ranking of teams.
6
Decision of panel of judges shall be final and abiding on all participating teams.
7
All competitors will be expected to uphold the ethical considerations of academic discourse in the process of competition and to represent the University, their college, and themselves to the best of their ability.

RULES FOR PAPER PRESENTATION:

General Rules:

1
The competition is open to students of  B.E./ B.Tech of any degree/ any class  in any recognized Engineering College of A.P.
2
The paper must be written by the team consisting of  one or two members
 

Teams and Nominations

Participation in the competition will be by teams comprising of two students each. Around 16 teams (one from each college) will be selected to participate in the final competition to be held in Hyderabad on 16th August 2011. The selection process will consist of two stages:
1.
In the first stage, each college may conduct an internal paper presentation contest and select one team (of 2
students) to be nominated for the final competition. If an actual presentation is not possible due to any reason, the college may screen the papers through any other method and identify the team to be nominated.
2.
The University College of Engineering, Osmania University will scrutinize all nominations and select around 16 teams
for participation in the final competition to be held on 16th August 2011.

Format of paper: A4 size, Single side, Single space, Font: Arial  10 , Max Pages=6 including figures, references etc.,

2011 as per above in MS Word.

Selected teams of participation need to submitt Two Hard copies of the Full length paper at the Venue on August 16th
 
2011 during Registration Students must carry college ID card for participationin the event. Otherwise, registrations may not be considered.

Presentation:

Each Team must formally make a presentation of their paper in Power Point Presentation on LCD Projector.
  No OHPs are provide for display of Transparencies.  Presentations must not be longer than 10 minutes. Negative marks will be assigned to any presentation that violates the time boundary.
A signal will be given at the beginning of the oral presentation.
A warning signal will be given at the end of 8 minutes and a stop signal will be given at the end of the 10 minutes.
  The student contestant should cease speaking when the stop signal is given.
Presentations may include  multimedia (audio/video) within the time permitted.
A 5-minute question and answer period will follow the presentation of the paper. Questions may be posed by
  judges or students attending the presentation.
Each team should carry a hard copy of the presentation for its own reference. The paper will be judged on the
  basis of content, clarity, quality of presentation and adherence to the time limit.

 

Topics for Papers

The objective of the competition is to encourage students to take interest in Renewable Energy and understand any particular technology or application. This is not a competition on research papers. Each team is required to select a specific topic and present the salient features or issues concerning the topic.
   
The topic can be a specific technology such as Solar Thermal Energy, Photovoltaics, Wind Energy, Small Hydropower or Biomass.  The paper can also be on some application of renewable energy such as Solar Energy for village electrification, grid power from wind energy, Power from municipal wastes, solar steam cooking, or a specific project or on methods of promoting renewable energy in the country. Vague and general topics such as “Renewable Energy” or even “Solar Energy” should be avoided.
Teams are free to collect material from books, news papers or the internet (adherence to copy right laws is responsibility of authors) for preparing their papers with due credit given in references at the end of the paper. Information or material relevant to India may be included to the extent possible.

 Final Competition

The final competition will be held on a single day (16th August 2011) from 9.00 A.M. to about 5.00 P.M. at the University College of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad. Registration of teams will begin at 8.30 A.M. Around 16 teams will be selected and are Personally Invited by email/Phone calls on 15th August 2011. All selected teams are required to report at the Registration desk at the venue between 8.30 and 9.00 A.M. on 16th August 2011. The order of presentation will be decided by Coordinator, RGAUD – 2011  and displayed or circulated on the morning of the competition. The event will be held in two sessions, one before lunch and another after lunch. Participants are requested to be present throughout the event. Lunch will be provided by the Organizer to all selected Participants.

All papers will be judged by a panel of judges and the names of the first three prize winning teams will be announced at the end of the competition. They will be awarded the prizes in a separate function being organized by NREDCAP in Hyderabad on the 20th August 2011.
